Field Navigation Lab

NEWF’s has facilitated its first Field Navigation Lab with eKhaya Storytelling, Research and Dive Centre as its basecamp and classroom, and a a roster of training taking place in the field further North. Facilitated by Massimo Rebuzzi from African Bush Company, this new addition to our programming is designed for film directors, cinematographers, photographers, scientists, and other field professionals. The lab aimed to provide essential knowledge about the art of filming in the wild, backed by sought-after FGASA certifications. NEWF plans to offer another edition of the Field Navigation Lab in May.
It’s a privilege and honour to work out here, and more so, to share it. Anytime I see something amazing, whether it be a member of the Big Five or a view of a mountain when I'm by myself, the enjoyment is a fraction of what I could have sharing it with others. It’s especially a privilege spending time exchanging knowledge with and training with people from Africa, with what is their heritage.

Field Guide, FGASA Assessor, and founder of African Bush Company
More than a year after the Bird Lab facilitated by Massimo (quote excerpted in the post-lab interview), Luyanda Shabalala and Nathan Rice joined him in the wild again - this time among a fresh cohort of fellows with a diverse collective nature, wildlife and technically creative skillset.
Throughout the program, the cohort had access to an extensive kit of binoculars, cameras, and educational resources to support new knowledge on animal behaviour, ethical and effective positioning of filming vehicles, key techniques for capturing compelling animal sequences, and the role of ecology, geology, weather, and climate in successful wildlife storytelling.
Additionally, upon completing and passing the exams, the participants received a Nature Enthusiast Certificate from the Field Guides Association of Southern Africa (FGASA) — a valuable credential for their professional portfolio.
