CHISOMO KAWAGA
Seldom found in front of the camera; this emerging cinematography talent has ambitious plans to make an impact in her home country, Malawi, and the African film industry at large. A multi-skilled talent who pivoted from Computer Technology to Film in 2017, she has gone on to hone a wide range of skills that include cinematography, drone operation, post-production, writing, and directing.
Her passion for film combined with her technical curiosity and skills saw her chosen for the 2022 Multichoice Talent Factory, a program designed to foster the growth of emerging talent in the African film industry. She has since gone on to join NEWF as a fellow through the African Science Film Fellowship (ASFF) where she produced The Flow of Hope, featuring and highlighting the research of Mozambiquan Scientist Zito Bande. Having the opportunity to work with industry professionals from across the continent, these valuable experiences have led to exchanges of knowledge like the one she shares with Carlos Noronha, an ASFF peer and NEWF Fellow who she has been filming alongside in the bush, and for projects like Indoni Yamanzi on the coast of Sodwana Bay.
After certifying as a SCUBA diver through NEWF’s Ocean Access program, she has been adding vast, coralline scenes to her cinematography kaleidoscope, one where her underwater skills have placed her in the position of mentoring peers with fewer dives, and underwater reels, under their belts. Sharing how supportive her family has been of her creative journey - and how serious and focused she gets once the camera rolls and she’s in work mode - it feels like this is just the beginning of a career that is sure to keep surprising many young, Black women across Africa.
